The Illusion of Palestinian Peace

The orgy of blood on Oct. 7, 2023, and everything that followed should have inspired a dream of peace. For anyone with a conscience, the horror would be enough to say: “Never again.”

Yet that isn’t what happened. When you ask Israelis how they are, their automatic “Fine, thank you” is no longer true; it’s merely a social convention. Their souls remain shaken.

But across the divide, in the Palestinian territories, the picture is far more disturbing. According to a recent survey by the Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research, 59% of Palestinians living under the Palestinian Authority—that is, in Judea and Samaria—believe that the decision to carry out the Oct. 7 massacre was “correct.” In Gaza, 44% agreed.

Even more shocking, 54% blame Israel for Palestinian suffering, while only 14% blame Hamas. And so, we must ask: what peace are we talking about? The one preached endlessly by the U.N., by Europe, and by French President Emmanuel Macron — “two states for two peoples”? Not only does it lack realism; a majority of Palestinians reject it outright.

The same survey shows that 40% of Palestinians believe an independent state must come through armed struggle, not negotiation; in Gaza, 35% say the same. These are not marginal numbers—they represent a society still enthralled by the myth of “resistance,” not the idea of coexistence.

As Israeli journalist Amit Segal has noted, Shany Mor’s essay “Ecstasy and Amnesia” explains this phenomenon well: the intoxication of violence, the inability of parts of the Islamic world—and the Palestinian one in particular—to separate history from religious emotion.

The “ecstasy” of jihad was visible on Oct. 7, in videos of young men calling their parents to boast about killing Jews with their own hands, and in the mobs cheering as kidnapped Israeli girls were paraded through Gaza’s streets.

Even academics in the West, such as Cornell’s Russell Rickford, revealed the same moral sickness when he called the massacre “exhilarating.”

Arab–Palestinian wars have always followed this script: an initial eruption of homicidal and suicidal ecstasy, followed by crushing defeat—the War of Independence (1948), the Six Day War (1967), the Intifadas, and now the war of Oct. 7. Yet from each failure, what remains in memory is the thrill of violence, not the price of it.

 

 

The Gaza War and the West's Reckoning

The Gaza war, while devastating in its own right, has revealed something more profound and more disturbing than the immediate tragedy in the Middle East. It has laid bare the West’s internal decline: the dominance of post-modern thinking, a failure of integration, a tolerance for imported hatreds, and a troubling vulnerability to foreign-funded disinformation. What started as a distant conflict has rapidly escalated into chaos on our streets, campuses, and institutions. Antisemitism surges. Extremism thrives. Underpinning it all is the exploitation of our freedoms by those seeking to destroy us from within.

The erosion of moral clarity within Western institutions, as revealed by the Gaza war, is deeply rooted in the intellectual decline caused by postmodern thinking..

The Gaza death toll is a perfect example. Rather than simply analysing the data we have, there is a whole academic sector dedicated to “proving” that the death toll is higher, simply because their feelings tell them it should be. Thus, we see a slew of methodologically unsound academic reports elevating the death toll, based on shaky research that seeks to reverse-engineer false conclusions, with outcomes predetermined long before the research began. The media report on these studies, and so false data floods the ecosystem of discussion.

This is symptomatic of the intellectual collapse in Western academia. Campuses steeped in post-modern ideology no longer teach students how to think, but what to feel. Critical thinking, once the very foundation of liberal education, has been replaced by critical theory, which sees every issue through the lens of race, power, and oppression. Truth is not determined by logic or evidence but by who can claim the greatest victimhood. In this paradigm, Jews are recast as oppressors simply because Israel exists and succeeds, despite their historic suffering and minority status.

This mindset has given rise to campus mobs who chant “intifada” and “globalise the resistance” without understanding (or perhaps not caring) what those slogans involve. It fuels the journalist who insists that “context” justifies atrocities, and the NGO that parrots Hamas death tolls without a shred of source criticism.

It has also corrupted our moral vocabulary. Terms like “genocide,” “colonialism,” and “apartheid” are now used not as serious legal or historical concepts, but as tools to attack the West and defend its enemies.

This is why facts no longer matter. Hamas can release a propaganda video, and it spreads faster than any IDF rebuttal. The rape and massacre of Israeli civilians is downplayed, while the mere accusation of disproportionate response becomes the dominant story. In a post-modern culture, emotion often trumps evidence. Narrative is everything, and if the narrative suits the ideological agenda, then it becomes sacred and untouchable.

The ultimate outcome is a culture that is disarmed in the face of evil. When morality is solely defined by power, victims who possess any form of power (Jews, Israel, the West) are recast as villains.

This is the crux of the matter: we are not seeing just an attack on Israel. This is an attack on the West.

Nowhere was this moral confusion more apparent than on American university campuses. Universities that once prided themselves on being centres of free thought have instead become breeding grounds for hatred. At Harvard, Columbia, and Cornell, students celebrated Hamas's atrocities, blaming Israel for the 7 October massacre. Administrators, terrified of offending activists, responded with cowardice. The line between protest and sympathising with terror blurred, and Jewish students were left abandoned.

This did not happen by chance; for decades, Soviet information operations pushed the post-modern line to left-leaning fellow travelers in academia. Russian propaganda continues to encourage, amplify and assault the fault lines in our societies. The corruption was also bought and paid for, in recent years. Qatari billions have flooded Western academia, creating ideological allies on campuses.

The result is academic departments that operate more like propaganda tools: a ruined intellectual critical paradigm, financially-compromised academics shaping civil servant and media narratives, and student groups like Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) that can organise “Day of Rage” rallies within hours of Hamas atrocities. Our universities, and the state and media institutions they inform, have legitimised hatred under the banner of social justice.

The West’s openness has become its Achilles heel. Adversaries understand this. Iran, Hamas, Qatar, Russia and their fellow travelers exploit our freedoms with surgical precision. They flood our social media with lies, fund our institutions, radicalise our youth and our immigrant populations, divide the remainder, and then sit back as our societies unravel from within.

This is not just about Israel. It never is. As history shows, when antisemitism surges, democracy itself is under threat. The Jews are the canary in the coal mine. If we cannot protect them, we have failed to protect the moral integrity of our society.

I fear we are lost. Our governments cannot even recognise the problem, let alone conceive a solution. We are ignoring the canary’s warning, and the entire mine is collapsing around us.

Hamas Depravity Enters Mind of the West

At a synagogue vigil in London on Monday evening for the victims of the Oct. 7 Hamas pogrom, Britain’s Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said he stood in solidarity with Israel.  Hamas, he said, “are not militants. They are not freedom fighters. They are terrorists. There is no question of balance. I stand with Israel.”

At virtually the same time he was making his morally uncompromising statement, a mob of around 1,000 people demonstrated outside Israel’s embassy in London chanting the war cry for the annihilation of Israel: “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free.” They were waving Palestinian flags, setting off fireworks and banging drums.  Similar demonstrations were held elsewhere. In Newcastle, a demonstrator called Ahmed held aloft a green flare and declared: “Let there be bloodshed for now. Hamas is a freedom movement. … Israel is an apartheid state.” Dana Abuqamar, president of Manchester Friends of Palestine, said she was “full of pride and joy” at the butchery.

This chilling glorification of the Hamas attack was repeated in demonstrations in America and Australia. Placards waved in New York City’s Times Square justified the rape and murder of women and the beheading of children as “resistance by any means necessary.”  In Australia, a mostly Muslim mob chanted “Gas the Jews” “f*** the Jews” and “f*** Israel” on the steps of the Sydney Opera House.  In Britain, America and Australia, people who were still trying to digest the appalling barbarism of the Hamas pogrom were horrified by this eruption of support within their midst for savages who had burned people alive, raped women and murdered children in front of their parents.

It’s necessary to understand just what was happening at these demonstrations. They weren’t just protests against Israel or supporting the Palestinians. They were frenzies of bloodlust.  The scale and barbarism of the slaughter in southern Israel produced in these demonstrators a jubilant excitement that more Jews would now be killed and Israel would be exterminated.  These shocking scenes, and the horrified and uncomprehending reaction they provoked, illustrated what so many Westerners have always failed to grasp about Islamic suicide bombings: That they are inspired not by despair but by exultation.

Hamas is barbaric, but what we have now seen is that this depravity has entered the collective mind of the West itself. In universities and other institutions and organizations, people have been blaming Israel for the Hamas pogrom.  Pro-Palestinian groups on campus have been glorifying the slaughter as “resistance to this vile occupation.”

Throughout the West, Hamas depravity has been met with silence from people who habitually leap to condemn “micro-aggressions” and other liberal thought crimes. As the British cultural historian Dr. Philip Kiszeley has observed: “Significant portions of the population are now comfortable to publicly sing and dance in celebration of rape, torture and murder. And many highly educated people are happy to frame this abomination as social justice.”  Among self-righteous actors and other celebrities, human-rights groups and feminists who campaign day in and day out against men for sexual assault, the barbarism of the Hamas death squads against women, children and old people has been met with silence.

In Britain, the BBC still refuses to call Hamas mass murderers terrorists. Even though it uses “terrorism” to describe the activities of Al Qaeda and ISIS, it refers to Hamas as “militants.” And that implies a double standard by the BBC towards victims of terror who happen to be Jews.

Other institutions are paralyzed by ignorance, apathy and moral confusion. The British police stood by and did nothing during the pro-Hamas demonstrations, even though the government has proscribed Hamas as a terrorist organization and it is a crime to glorify terrorism. 

Support for the Palestinian cause is ingrained throughout the Western liberal world. As a result, generations have been brainwashed into believing the lie that Israel is a colonial oppressor and the Palestinian Arab aggressors are its victims.  That’s why every attempt by the Israelis to defend themselves militarily against the Palestinians results in increased attacks on Diaspora Jews  British Jews are under siege. Community patrols have been stepped up. A Jewish school in London has told its children not to wear their school blazer off the premises, as it bears an obvious Jewish symbol.

Now we can see how the Holocaust was allowed to happen. When evil people try to wipe the Jews from the earth, millions avert their gaze, fruitlessly wring their hands or even tacitly support those involved in such evil.  Never again? It’s happened again.

Congress Should Block Any UNESCO Funding

• The deeply corrupt, highly politicized United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) will vote later this week on declaring Jericho, an ancient Jewish city, a "World Heritage Site in Palestine."
• The Palestinian Authority submitted a nomination of Jericho, which it wants to rename Tell es-Sultan.
• UNESCO's purpose is to promote "international cooperation in education, sciences, culture, communication and information" which it is supposed to do through "knowledge sharing and the free flow of ideas." Nowhere does it say that UNESCO has the least right to meddle in ongoing conflicts and create make-believe "facts" on the ground.
• This illegitimate imposition is not the first time that UNESCO is putting on display its anti-Israel bias, penchant for faking history and an impressive tradition of lying.
• In 2010, UNESCO renamed the Jewish site of Rachel's Tomb the "Bilal Bin Rabah Mosque," stating that it was part of "occupied Palestine."" ... At the time, only the US voted against these straight-faced falsifications of Jewish history.
• In 2016, UNESCO declared Jerusalem's Temple Mount – site of the two biblical Jewish temples – "a Muslim holy site of worship" and mentioned it only by its Islamic names, the "Al-Aqsa Mosque/Al-Haram Al-Sharif." It also renamed the Western Wall -- a retaining wall which is all that remains of the Jewish Second Temple that was destroyed by the Roman Legions in 70 CE -- "Al-Buraq Plaza".
• "[T]hey decided that the Tomb of the Patriarchs in Hebron is a Palestinian site, meaning that it is not Jewish, and that the site is in danger. Not a Jewish site?! Who is buried there? Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Sarah, Rebecca and Leah – our patriarchs and matriarchs! And the site is in danger? It is only in those places where Israel is, such as Hebron, that freedom of religion for all is ensured." — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, The Guardian, July 7, 2017.
• Corruption, politicization, and the falsification history do not appear, however, to bother the Biden administration in the least. In July 2023, the United States rejoined UNESCO, even though the organization has been called "a byword for inefficiency, nepotism and corruption" and was cited "among the most corrupt and politically biased UN agencies."
• UNESCO does nothing to counter China, Russia, North Korea or Iran, but does do a lot to demoralize those countries hoping that the US will still be the leader of the Free World. UNESCO's corruption, with America's backing, is simply driving these countries still further into the waiting arms of China.
• If US membership in UNESCO is to have any purpose at all, the least the Biden administration can do with its taxpayer dollars is all it can to prevent Jericho from becoming a "Heritage site in Palestine."
• For a start, there is no "State of Palestine." In fact, until 1964, there was not even a "Palestinian people".
• "The Palestinian people does not exist. The creation of a Palestinian state is only a means for continuing our struggle against the state of Israel for our Arab unity. In reality, today there is no difference between Jordanians, Palestinians, Syrians and Lebanese. Only for political and tactical reasons do we speak today about the existence of a Palestinian people, since Arab national interests demand that we posit the existence of a distinct Palestinian people to oppose Zionism." — Zoheir Mohsen, Palestinian leader, interview in Trouw, March 31, 1977.
• "For tactical reasons, Jordan, which is a sovereign state with defined borders, cannot raise claims to Haifa and Jaffa, while as a Palestinian, I can undoubtedly demand Haifa, Jaffa, Beer-Sheva and Jerusalem. However, the moment we reclaim our right to all of Palestine, we will not wait even a minute to unite Palestine and Jordan." — Zoheir Mohsen, Trouw, March 31, 1977.
• It is important to remember: Until the seventh century there were not even any Muslims in the world, let alone Palestinians.
• In 2021, UNESCO published a handbook: "Journalism, 'Fake News' and Disinformation: A Handbook for Journalism Education and Training." Perhaps the good folks at UNESCO might read it before they vote?
• Failing that, the US Congress should "should firmly block any UNESCO funding, as it has consistently done" -- as Bolton suggested.

This week’s Jewish Chronicle features a major story by David Rose, which reveals that Britain has been investing millions of pounds in training the Palestinian Authority in human rights even while the PA has been perpetrating torture and beating a prominent Palestinian democracy and human rights campaigner to death.

For many in the west, it has long been an article of faith that peace will only come to the Middle East when the Palestinians gain a state of their own.

Along with the EU and America, successive British governments have promoted a “two-state solution” to the conflict between Israel and the Palestinian Arabs.

Central to this thinking is a key distinction. Hamas is considered beyond the pale as Islamist extremists who throw gay Palestinians off rooftops to their death and make no bones about their aim to destroy Israel. But the Palestinian Authority headed by Mahmoud Abbas is deemed “moderate” and entitled to run a future state of Palestine that would be part of the community of nations.

The JC has now exposed this faith in the PA as an excruciating misjudgment.

For while Britain has been investing millions in it in the arrogant belief that it can teach it western values, Palestinian officers have been murdering and torturing dissenters who campaign for their human rights.

Last year Nizar Banat, a leading Palestinian campaigner for freedom and democracy, was dragged from his home in Hebron by a squad of 14 PA officers and beaten with a hammer so severely he effectively drowned in his own blood. His murder triggered weeks of protests that were in turn violently crushed by the PA security forces.

Now the JC has revealed that for the past 14 years a “British Support Team” under the command of a brigadier has been training PA officers in human rights — including “inclusivity and gender awareness”.

The JC investigation shows that, in PA-controlled territory, torture by these forces is routine and systemic. People are arrested for their political views; lawyers are beaten; women are sexually assaulted.

A senior PA official said torture was justified to gather intelligence and that Banat deserved to be killed. Yet the British are solemnly teaching such people “inclusivity and gender awareness”. Maybe someone should teach the British “humility and self-awareness”.

The idea that human rights training might turn the PA into defenders of law and liberty is as laughable as it would be to provide human rights training to Vladimir Putin’s secret police or Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

Yet Britain has long told itself ten impossible things before breakfast about the Palestinians. Ever since the Oslo Accords in the nineties established the PA as the putative government of a Palestinian state, Britain and others in the west have resolutely denied the truth about it.

They’ve denied that its aim has remained the destruction of Israel; denied  that British and EU funding facilitates PA incitement to murder Israeli Jews and steal their land; denied the savage repression it inflicts upon its own people.

Whitehall’s moral blindness is truly epic. Astoundingly, Britain has repeatedly claimed that its Palestinian human rights training is succeeding.

In 2011, the Foreign Office stated: “The PA leadership is committed to strengthening human rights and is making good progress” 

In 2018, the Foreign Office awarded itself an official score of “A+” for its PA programme, meaning that it had “exceeded expectations” for developing “capable, accountable and responsive security and justice services”.

Well, we can now see that the PA’s “accountable and responsive” reaction to this training was to continue to perpetrate torture and to produce a brutal squad that beat a human rights campaigner to death.

As a result, millions of pounds have been squandered. Worse, Britain has made itself complicit with a tyrannical regime that oppresses its own people.

Worse still, the British government has been helping sanitise the PA and perpetuating the lethal fiction that it can be trusted to uphold human rights.

It told itself this because it wanted to believe it. To put it another way, if it acknowledged that the PA was incorrigibly despotic with no understanding of or commitment to justice, the rule of law and respect for human life, it would have to acknowledge that there could be no state of Palestine in the foreseeable future.

That would mean its support for the Palestinian cause would be negated. It would mean that when Israel said the Palestinians posed a mortal threat to life and liberty, they were all too correct.

This would not only derail a key feature of British foreign policy. It would also show up as hypocrites, idiots or fellow-travellers of tyranny all who support the establishment of a Palestinian state run by the PA.

Since such a state is the cause of causes for the western intelligentsia, the truth must be denied. More than £65 million has now been wasted in perpetrating a lethal “human rights” fiction instead.

ICC Gives Itself Authority to Adjudicate Israeli "War Crimes:"

Last Friday the International Criminal Court (also referred to as “the Hague”) announced its decision to exercise jurisdiction over Israel and within “Palestine” for the purpose of prosecuting Israel for alleged war crimes.

Despite the legalistic sounding name of the “court” it actually functions as a political body: in this case a body that on Friday granted itself the authority to bring politically driven prosecutions against any country in the world, whether or not that country has agreed to be a part of the ICC’s activities.

This prosecution will set a dangerous precedent not only for the Jewish state, its leaders, soldiers and private citizens, but also for citizens of all nations that may potentially become the next victims of this growing international populism. Friday’s decision may change the very nature of international law in a manner that stands to harm our growth as a global community.

The International Criminal Court is not a “court”

The words “International Criminal Court” are seductively misleading: they give the impression that the ICC is a body that interprets legislative law. It is not.  Certainly, in theory, the ICC is supposed to perform like a court. In practice, however, it functions as political body that carries out decisions based on the interests of its members.

Case in point: prosecutor Fatou Bensouda came to the ICC after her tenure as Minister of Justice of Gambia, where she presided over and enforced the country’s laws and practices in favor of torture, arbitrary arrest, legal rape, sex trafficking and female genital mutilation.  Despite a 2018 US State Department report detailing these practices, and despite the fact that Gambia is a signatory to the Rome Statute, prosecutor Bensouda has not seen fit to prosecute the leadership of her homeland, including herself.

Other parties who have never been prosecuted at the Hague include leaders of Syria who are responsible for the largest loss of human life in recent history, Turkey, which in the last decades murdered thousands of Kurds; China, which is holding millions of Muslims in “reeducation” camps; Iran, which is behind the war crimes being perpetrated in Yemen, and many more.

The sheer number of human lives that might have been saved by a proper application of the ICC’s mission is in the millions.  Instead,  the ICC, an unelected, undemocratic political body is attempting to apply unchecked global power based on political agenda. This stands to injure global trust in international institutions and the very nature of international law, thus posing serious and long-term harm to our world’s growth as a cooperative global community.

The word “colonialism” brings to mind many things. Most notably, it is a term associated with European imperialist adventures in the “New World” and all of the attendant horrors that followed. It invokes, in specie, mental images of white-European settlers, armed with Bibles and bayonets, dominating “less advanced” indigenous populations

And since nearly all of these and other more infamous examples of colonialism were specifically white-European, the concept itself has come to be seen as associated with white supremacism. It is under this rubric, and in conjunction with the postmodern progressive fixation on racial justice that Zionism has been cast as a “colonial” movement, while the ongoing Arab effort to reverse the gains made by the indigenous Jewish people in 1948 is championed as “anti-colonialism”.

Zionism, however, is not colonialism, but the polar opposite thereof. To understand why this is so, it is important to clearly define both of these concepts.

Colonialism is, at a baseline level, the practice of expropriating foreign territory and incorporating it into a metropole, or “mother country” (e.g. the British Crown). This process typically entails occupying these new lands with settlers, suppressing local indigenous populations, and enforcing the tongue, culture, and lifestyle of the metropole on the aforementioned indigenous inhabitants.

Zionism is an indigenous people’s repatriation/liberation movement. The yearning to return to our homeland has been ingrained in our culture ever since we were jettisoned from our soil by foreign occupiers, primarily into Europe, North Africa, and other parts of the Middle East.

Zionism is, at its core, an indigenous rights project, and has been since day one. The Jews returning from exile had no mother country to “colonize” on behalf of. Israel IS the mother country.

It is commonly alleged by anti-Zionists that the early Israelites were themselves conquerors (of Mesopotamian stock), but this is not corroborated by scholarship.

Now let’s discuss the real colonialism occurring within Palestine – specifically, that conducted by Arab Palestine itself.

The Arabs sought to expand their holdings and their power through acquisition of foreign territory. Conquest, war, and totalization were the popular mode of “progress” in that era, so it isn’t surprising that the Arabs sought to build an empire of their own. Their first conquests included, by dint of proximity, the upper parts of Middle East, specifically Iraq, Israel, Lebanon, and Syria. They immediately set about the project of “Arabization”: raising taxes on indigenous peoples, restricting our government access, curtailing our civil liberties, replacing our sacred sites with mosques (the most notable example being the Al-Aqsa compound, which sits on the very location where our Temple once was),

What, then, is the Palestinian cause? It is, in essence, a reaction to Zionism and the State of Israel itself. Although it ludicrously presents itself as an indigenous rights-oriented cause, it is really nothing more than a front for Arab imperialism. It is hoped that, by repatriating the 6 million or so descendants of Arab refugees into Israel, the Jews in Israel will be demographically overwhelmed and we will be robbed of our self-determination once more, transforming our country into a de facto Arab state.

The Palestinian cause has nothing whatsoever to do with human rights or “anti-colonialism”. It is about nothing more than the Arab world’s desire to regain its lost “honor” by accomplishing through stealth what it failed to do by force: restoring their hegemony over Israel and putting the “uppity” Jews back in their place.

It is a claim that has been weaponized against indigenous peoples and used to sweep us under the rug, all in the hope of removing us from our homelands and ensuring that they remain “Arab”. They’ve appropriated the Jews histories and identities as their own without actually belonging to our cultures or suffering for them, and despite centuries of benefiting from the very same system of colonial domination that led to our dispossession in the first place.

I think we have every right to be pissed off about that.

In 2002, Hassan Nasrallah, the secretary-general of Hezbollah, was said to have given a speech noting that the creation of the state of Israel had spared his followers the trouble of hunting down Jews at “the ends of the world.” The Lebanese terrorist group has prominentapologists in the West, and some of them rushed to claim that Nasrallah had uttered no such thing.

Except he had. Tony Badran of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies tracked down the original recording of the speech, in which Nasrallah carries on about “occupied Palestine” as the place appointed by Allah for the “final and decisive battle” with the Jews. By “occupied Palestine,” he wasn’t talking about the West Bank.

Sometimes anti-Zionists are — surprise! — homicidal anti-Semites, too.

That’s a thought that can’t be far from the mind of anyone living in northern Israel, where in recent days the Israeli Army has discovered at least three tunnels dug by Hezbollah and intended to infiltrate commandos under the border in the (increasingly likely) event of war. Given the breadth of Hezbollah’s capabilities, the depth of its fanaticism, and the experience of Hamas’s excavation projects in Gaza, it’s fair to assume other tunnels will be found.

What would Hezbollah do if it got its fighters across? In 1974, three Palestinian terrorists crossed the border from Lebanon and took 115 hostages at an elementary school in the town of Ma’alot. They murdered 25 of them, including 22 children.

Another infiltration from Lebanon in 1978 left 38 Israelis dead. Given Hezbollah’s long record of perpetrating massacres from Buenos Airesto Beirut to towns and cities across Syria, it’s a playbook it wouldn’t scruple to follow in a war for the Galilee.

Note: Anti-Zionists are not advocating the reform of a state, as Japan was reformed after 1945. Nor are they calling for the adjustment of a state’s borders, as Canada’s border with the United States was periodically adjusted in the 19th century. They’re not talking about the birth of a separate state, either, as South Sudan was born out of Sudan in 2011. And they’re certainly not championing the partition of a multiethnic state into ethnically homogenous components, as Yugoslavia was partitioned after 1991.

Anti-Zionism is ideologically unique in insisting that one state, and one state only, doesn’t just have to change. It has to go. By a coincidence that its adherents insist is entirely innocent, this happens to be the Jewish state, making anti-Zionists either the most disingenuous of ideologues or the most obtuse. When then-CNN contributor Marc Lamont Hill called last month for a “free Palestine from the river to the sea” and later claimed to be ignorant of what the slogan really meant, it was hard to tell in which category he fell.

The good news is that the conversation about anti-Zionism remains mostly academic because Israelis haven’t succumbed to the fatal illusion that, if only they behaved better, their enemies would hate them less. To the extent that Israeli parents ever sleep soundly, it’s because they know what they are up against. And, to borrow Kipling’s line, they never make mock of uniforms that guard them while they sleep.

The same can’t be said for that class of scolds who excel in making excuses for the wicked and finding fault with the good. When you find yourself on the same side as Hassan Nasrallah, Louis Farrakhan and David Duke on the question of a country’s right to exist, it’s time to re-examine every opinion you hold.

• As Abbas and his advisors prepare for the May 3 meeting with Trump, thousands of Palestinians gathered in Ramallah to call on Arab armies to "liberate Palestine, from the (Jordan) river to the (Mediterranean) sea." The Palestinians also called for replacing Israel with an Islamic Caliphate.
• It is possible that deep inside, Abbas and many of his top aides identify with the goals of Hizb ut Tahrir, namely the elimination of Israel. Abbas also wishes to use these Islamic extremists to depict himself as the "good guy" versus the "bad guys." This is a ploy intended to dupe Westerners into giving him more funds "out of fear that the Islamists may take over."
• Abbas's claim that he seeks a just and comprehensive peace with Israel is refuted by fact after fact on the ground. His sweet-talk about peace and the two-state solution will have far less impact on Palestinians than the voices of Hizb ut Tahrir and its sister groups, which strive to "liberate Palestine, from the river to the sea."

Westerners often refer to Ramallah as a modern and liberal city dominated by Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas's Fatah faction. The city boasts fancy restaurants and bars where alcohol is served freely to men and women in Western dress, who sit together to eat and to smoke water pipes (nargilas).

But the scenes on the streets of Ramallah, headquarters of Abbas's Palestinian Authority (PA) last week broadcast a rather different message -- one that calls for the elimination of Israel. The message came on the eve of Abbas's visit to the White House for his first meeting with US President Donald Trump.

According to PA officials, Abbas is scheduled to affirm during the meeting with Trump his commitment to the two-state solution and a "comprehensive and just peace" with Israel.

Abbas claims 6,000-year-old Palestinian nation

Mahmoud Abbas:

• "The Bible says that the Palestinians existed before Abraham"
• "The invention of the Canaanite-Palestinian alphabet [was] more than 6,000 years ago"

Abbas' advisor claims 

5,000-year Palestinian history in the land:

Mahmoud Al-Habbash:

• "We have been here for the last 5,000 years, and have not left this land"
• "Our forefathers are the monotheist Canaanites and Jebusites"

In order to make Palestinians believe that they have an ancient history that precedes Jewish history in the land of Israel, Palestinian Authority leaders regularly fabricate tales of a 5,000- or sometimes 6,000-year-old Palestinian nation. Recently, PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas and his advisor Mahmoud Al-Habbash each spoke on two different occasions about a Palestinian nation that they claim preceded Abraham in the land of Canaan. Abbas even misrepresented the Bible by claiming biblical support for his claims: 

 

Mahmoud Abbas: "Our narrative says that we were in this land since before Abraham. I am not saying it. The Bible says it. The Bible says, in these words, that the Palestinians existed before Abraham. So why don't you recognize my right?"

Abbas' statement about the Bible is false. The only Biblical reference Abbas could be talking about is the text that Abraham dwelt "many days in the land of the Philistines." (Genesis 21: 34). However, the Philistines have no connection to today's Palestinian Arabs. The Philistines were a people of Greek origin who settled in the land of Canaan and lived beside the Israelite tribes. The Palestinians who are Arabs could not have had ancestors in the land from biblical times predating Israelite and Judean statehood because Arabs only arrived in the land in 637 CE with the Muslim invasion. Needless to say, the "Palestinians" are not mentioned in the Bible.

Significantly, Abbas says that this "fact" - which is a fabrication - is what gives Palestinians a "right" to the land.

Mahmoud Al-Habbash, Mahmoud Abbas' advisor on Religious and Islamic Affairs and Supreme Shari'ah Judge, also repeated the false claim about a 5,000-year-old Palestinian people who predated Abraham, in last week's Friday sermon:

"They [the Jews] are thieves who stole the land, and who want to steal the history, but history cannot change and cannot be falsified. The facts bear witness to it. We have been here for the last 5,000 years, and have not left this land. We have not left this land. Our forefathers are the monotheist Canaanites and Jebusites. They are the ones who built Jerusalem, before Abraham was even here."

In another recent televised talk, Abbas voiced two additional falsehoods, first speaking about an ancient Canaanite-Palestinian people with a 6,000-year-old history, and then adding that this ancient people invented an alphabet:

"This land was never without a people, as we have been planted in its rocks and dust and hills since the beginning of civilization and writing and the invention of the Canaanite-Palestinian alphabet more than 6,000 years ago."

Writing was only invented around 3,500 BCE. The earliest Canaanite alphabet, considered to be the ancestor of most modern alphabets, is dated to around 1,500 BCE.

In Al-Habbash's talk last Friday, he added yet another falsehood, denying the well-documented Jewish history in the land of Israel:

"They [the Jews] claim that there was a Temple here. Those are unfounded claims, myths, and rumors."

Two months ago, Al-Habbash also spoke about this alleged 5,000-year-old "history," claiming Palestinians were "the first to reside in this land":

"The Palestinians have been on this land for 5,000 years. Of course, we were the first to reside in this land. The first to reside in it. There was no one before us. Never was there a period in this history of this land when we were not in it. Over the course of these millennia, many have passed through this land and left. History has turned the page on them, but the land remained as well as its people and its true owners who never changed. This occupation is a transient thing, despite the pain and suffering."

Palestinian Media Watch has documented the PA's historical revision in detail for years.

In 2014, Al-Habbash presented this fabricated history more in detail, adding that Israel's existence is destined to end and that Israel will leave because all other "nations" who came to "this land" were temporary and left. According to Abbas' advisor Israel is like other "foreigners... Crusaders... Tatars" and "will pass":

"We have been on this land for 5,000 years, perhaps the Palestinian nation itself. Of course, over the course of all these years and long centuries, for over 5,000 years, many empires and nations came to this land, to Jerusalem, one after the other. They came and went, lived here for a certain period of time, and then left. But the essential substance that remained - like the rocks of this land, like the grains of sand of this land, like the water of this land, like the air of this land, like the olive tree of this land - the essential substance that stayed is the Palestinian people. There was no period in history without the presence of the Palestinian people on this land. We are the salt of this earth, we are its essence, we are its air and water and we will never leave it. Many transients left and will leave... This land is ours. The Nakba (i.e., "the catastrophe," Palestinian term for establishment of State of Israel), believe me, the Nakba will pass, just as the others who passed. The foreigners, the imperialism of the Crusaders, lived here for more than 92 years, and then scattered and left. The Tatars came and then left. Others came and left and the land remained with its people, its sons. The Palestinians remained in Palestine, and they will stay until Allah inherits the earth."

PA leaders use this false historical narrative to indoctrinate their people to deny Jewish history in the land and instead adopt an imaginary Palestinian history. This ultimately serves to encourage Palestinians to deny Israel's right to exist and is the basis for Palestinian claims to the land. As Abbas said:

"The Palestinians existed before Abraham. So why don't you recognize my right?"
